President Joe Biden is desperate to talk about anything other than the disaster he created in Afghanistan. Which is why he briefly came out of hiding on Wednesday to launch a partisan attack on Republican governors over masks in schools.
“Some politicians are trying to turn public safety measures — that is, children wearing masks in school — into political disputes for their own political gain,” Biden said, without a hint of self-awareness. “Some are even trying to take power away from local educators by banning masks in school. They’re setting a dangerous tone.”
This is just false. Literally no one is trying to ban masks in schools. Now, at least eight states (including Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah) have sought to give parents the option of not masking their children in school, but none of these states has in any way tried to ban anyone from wearing a mask in school if they want one.
One does wonder where Biden and all these schools get their certainty that mandating masks is the best policy for children. In Europe, masks are required for teachers but not for students. Maybe Biden could try a little humility for once, and let parents decide how best to protect their children.
