Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday that “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels needs to go after the show mocked a combat veteran who lost an eye in Afghanistan.
“These people mocked a combat veteran, and this is what they think is funny these days?” Spicer said on Fox News. “Lorne Michaels should be fired.”
On the show’s purposefully fake news segment, “Weekend Update,” Pete Davidson talked about Texas House candidate Dan Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL who was hit by an IED blast in Afghanistan which cost him his eye.
“You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate for Texas and not a hit man in a porno movie,” Davidson said, mocking Crenshaw’s eyepatch.
“I’m sorry. I know he lost his eye in war — or whatever,” he said.
Spicer said Michaels and everyone on the show knew the joke was coming.
“This isn’t just Pete Davidson that did this,” he said. “They are continuing to promote this video.”
“Lorne Michaels … he approved of it. It watched it happen. That entire anchor desk, fake weekend update was laughing at it, and then they continue to promote it on YouTube.”
