‘Pro-life Spider-Man’ scales Oklahoma building in latest anti-abortion stunt

A man who calls himself the “pro-life Spider-Man” scaled Oklahoma‘s tallest skyscraper on Tuesday in his latest stunt for anti-abortion activism.

Local police said they were aware Tuesday morning of a person climbing the 844-foot-tall Devon Tower in downtown Oklahoma City and advised residents to avoid the area. Once he successfully climbed to the top, Maison Des Champs was met by first responders and police and taken into custody.

“This morning a climber scaled the side of Devon Tower. We are happy to report that he is now safe,” Devon Energy tweeted. “A huge THANK YOU to our local OKC emergency responders for getting here quickly and taking action.”

Des Champs, 23, will only face a trespassing complaint following the climbing stunt, according to the Oklahoma City Police Department. The daredevil climber is a finance student originally from Michigan and has climbed multiple skyscrapers with nothing but a chalk bag and clothes on his back in an effort to raise money for anti-abortion organizations. Another person who was operating a camera drone was also taken into custody, police said.

In an Instagram story shared by his account @prolife.spiderman, the activist took a video of himself scaling the skyscraper and directed followers to donate to letthemlive.org.

“Out here at Devon Tower, Oklahoma City,” Des Champs said, adding that people were gathering to watch on the ground but there’s “no helicopter yet.”

In May, Des Champs also climbed a 60-floor building in San Francisco, California, for similar anti-abortion causes.

“The charities that I have chosen seek to financially support abortion-minded women to prevent them from having abortions,” Des Champs’s wrote in a post after climbing the Bay Area building. “They do not scream at women, they do not blame women, they only offer help.”

Des Champs claims on his website that he climbed the 600-foot Aria Hotel in Las Vegas to protest Nevada’s COVID-19 mandates in August 2021. A video from his social media posted that month showed protesters chanting “U-S-A!”

The latest wall-crawler stunt comes in a state that recently enacted the country’s strictest abortion law, banning physicians from performing abortions at any point in a pregnancy unless it is to save the life of the mother or if the pregnancy is the result of incest, rape, or sexual assault reported to law enforcement.

Gov. Kevin Stitt signed the bill, HB 4327, into law on May 25 under the campaign promise he made to “sign every piece of pro-life legislation that came across my desk.”

The stunt also comes as the Supreme Court is poised to rule on whether to reverse the precedent under Roe v. Wade. A May 2 leaked draft opinion by the high court signaled a majority of the justices were prepared to overturn the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

A final ruling on abortion is expected in the coming weeks.
