Updated: 9:40 p.m.: An eight-year-old boy was killed Sunday when he and his mother were struck by a car that ran off an Alexandria road.
The boy was hit about 2:28 p.m. on Duke Street when a 22-year-old Fairfax County man driving a 1994 Honda Accord veered off the street near the Interstate 395 overpass. Alexandria police said it was not clear why he drove off the road.
The car then continued down an embankment into the guardrail of the interstate.
The boy, whose name was not released Sunday, died at the scene. His mother suffered not life threatening injuries. The driver was not hurt.
No one had been charged Sunday evening. Police were still investigating.

A pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday afternoon near the Landmark Mall in Alexandria.
The person was hit in the 5800 block of Duke Street around 2:30 p.m., according to Alexandria authorities.
