LAPD declares unlawful assembly amid violent clash outside spa at heart of transgender rights controversy

A violent clash outside a Korean spa at the heart of a controversy over transgender rights has been declared an unlawful assembly by the Los Angeles Police Department, according to multiple outlets.

A protest of Wi Spa’s policy allowing transgender women to disrobe in the women’s section was scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday morning, and by 12:30 p.m., the LAPD had declared an unlawful assembly, with police in tactical gear ushering a crowd off the street as some demonstrators set a dumpster on fire and screamed in officers’ faces, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Video from the scene showed the transgender rights supports, who were clad in black, cursing at the protesters, spraying them with an unidentified substance, pushing them, punching them, and demanding that they leave the area, the outlet added. It is unclear whether any arrests have been made.

Representatives for the LAPD did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.

The clash stemmed from an incident that occurred last weekend. An Instagram user with the handle @cubanaangel posted a video apparently showing the user confronting spa staff after having seen male genitalia while disrobing at the spa.

“I just want to be clear with you. It’s OK — it’s OK for a man to go into the women’s section, show his penis around the other women, young little girls [who are] underage? Your spa, Wi Spa, condone[s] that? Is that what you’re saying?” an off-camera voice can be heard asking.

The spa worker’s response is muffled, but the original voice then responds, “What sexual orientation? I see a d***. It lets me know he’s a man. He’s a man.”

As the spa worker speaks, the off-camera voice repeatedly says, “He is not a female. He is not a female.”

“[There’s] girls down there, other women, who are highly offended [by] what they just saw, and you did nothing, absolutely nothing. In fact, you sided with him,” the voice said. “So, Wi Spa is in agreement with men that just say they are a woman and they can go down there with their penis and get into the women’s section. Is that what you’re saying?”

The off-camera voice then appears to encourage a fellow customer, who also seems disturbed by the incident, to get a refund.

A man who appears to be a fellow customer approaches the poster and asks, “Are you talking about the transgender person?”

“There is no such thing as transgender. He has a d***. OK? He has a penis,” she responds, later adding, “As a woman, I have a right to feel comfortable without a man exposing himself. OK? … It’s traumatizing to see that.”

After the off-camera voice tells the other customer he’s “out of alignment and this is not right,” she appears to address the spa’s female customers directly, at which point one of them voices agreement.

“He should’ve not been allowed to do that,” one of them tells the poster.

“Exactly,” she replies. “Exactly.”
