The former Navy SEAL credited with firing fatal shots at al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden expressed his relief at the death of terrorist leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, calling the extremist head of the Islamic State a “scumbag.”
“Hey scumbag, tell bin Laden I said what’s up,” Robert J. O’Neill tweeted Sunday after President Trump shared news of a successful U.S. operation in Syria that led to Baghdadi’s death.

Trump announced some details of the operation in Syria on Sunday morning, including that Baghdadi found himself cornered in a tunnel and used a suicide vest to take the lives of several children in addition to his own. When asked whether he informed Congress of the operation ahead of time, Trump said he told some lawmakers but did not disclose the plans to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff.
“We notified some,” Trump, who received backlash from Pelosi for withholding details from congressional leaders, said of the highly secretive raid. “Others are being notified now as I speak. We were going to notify them last night, but we decided not to do that because Washington leaks like I’ve never seen before. There’s nothing — there’s no country in the world that leaks like we do, and Washington is a leaking machine.”
O’Neill, 43, known for his often outspoken presence on social media, also slammed Schiff and suggested that he was not informed of the operation due to a lack of trustworthiness, which Trump confirmed on Monday morning by calling Schiff “the biggest leaker in Washington.”
“If you’re the House Intel Chairman and are not told about the raid to kill the world’s #1 terrorist … you might be a leaker,” O’Neill said on Sunday afternoon.

O’Neill has previously criticized Democratic lawmakers on Twitter for what he perceives to be lopsided priorities. In June, the former SEAL targeted California Rep. Eric Swalwell for a tweet that promoted his advocacy for illegal immigrant families that said, “To immigrant families: We see you, we are here for you and we will not stop fighting for you. Families belong together. Period.”
“You spelled ‘Homeless Veterans’ wrong,” O’Neill fired back.
