Liberal crime policies kept Taylor Swift’s stalker on the streets

Taylor Swift, a billionaire and supporter of left-wing political causes who is well known for her fandom of the Kansas City Chiefs football team, was the victim of a series of stalking incidents this week.

David Crowe, 33, was arrested Wednesday after he was spotted outside Swift’s New York City apartment building. It was Crowe’s third arrest in five days for stalking Swift, whose apartment he apparently has staked out about 30 times over the past two months.

Swift’s budding music career has afforded her a legion of fans, who were stunned to hear Crowe wasn’t held in custody following his previous arrests. News reports of the arrests were met with a flurry of posts on social media wondering why the serial stalker was released so quickly.

Of course, the answer to this question lies in the policies enacted by the Democratic politicians Swift has urged her fans to support. A little more than four years ago, the state of New York passed a law that eliminated cash bail for most misdemeanor and non-violent felonies, including stalking.

Such changes to bail law have been pushed by various social and racial justice organizations that claim that cash bail is regressive and harms racial minority groups that tend to have lower incomes and are more likely to be arrested than white people.

But a consequence of eliminating bail for misdemeanor crimes such as stalking is that Crowe was released quickly from custody after his arrests, even though he posed a clear and immediate danger to Swift. It was only after the third arrest in less than a week that a judge finally ordered him to be detained.

It is quite ironic to see Swift’s fans fret over her safety when the policies that she and her Democratic supporters continue to vote and express support for are the very reason that Crowe was in a position to endanger her to begin with. After all, there is no similar concern for the safety of thousands of New York residents who have seen crime rates skyrocket in recent years as dangerous criminals spend mere hours in custody.

But don’t count on Swift or her fans to take any notice of their cognitive dissonance — they’ll just blame the police instead.
