Early results: Nearly 20 million watched Jan. 6 hearings

Nielsen released preliminary ratings for Thursday night showing that nearly 20 million viewers tuned into the Jan. 6 committee hearings across various channels.

Several major TV networks paused their regular programming to air the hearings, which were the first of their kind to be scheduled during prime-time television. Most networks also streamed them on YouTube.

ABC saw the largest audience, earning 4.8 million viewers, MSNBC followed with 4.1 million, and NBC racked up 3.5 million. CBS garnered a viewership of 3.3 million as well. Despite not airing the hearing, Fox News saw 2.9 million views. Programs on the channel featured video coverage of the hearings alongside its hosts and guests but no audio.

While Fox News did often commentate on the hearings, some segments involved little to no mention of Jan. 6. At one point, host Sean Hannity interviewed Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) about his recently released book arguing against court packing on the Supreme Court. CNN came behind Fox News, at 2.6 million.

Fox Business, which did air the hearing, received 223,128 viewers.
