White House ‘working’ on revoking Biden’s mask mandate for federal buildings

The White House is working on rolling back President Joe Biden’s January executive order mandating all people on federal properties wear face masks, but it won’t happen immediately.

Press secretary Jen Psaki, referencing the newly released mask guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters at Friday’s briefing that the administration is “working to implement those across the government.”

She noted that nearly immediately after CDC Director Rochelle Walensky issued the guidance on Thursday, the White House lifted its mask mandates for staff, journalists, officials, and other visitors, assuming they have been fully vaccinated.

“So, we’re working to implement,” Psaki said. “It may take a couple of days, but certainly, I would expect on federal lands, federal properties that the guidelines will be the guide.”

The CDC’s new guidance states that people more than 14 days removed from receiving their second coronavirus vaccine no longer need to wear masks in nearly every situation, both indoors and outdoors. The guidance does still recommend, however, that vaccinated people still wear masks while riding public transportation or in extremely crowded instances, such as concerts, rallies, or full capacity sporting events.
