In a “rare” move, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk endorsed Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rick Caruso on Friday.
“Los Angeles is fortunate to have someone like Rick Caruso running for mayor,” Musk tweeted. “He’s awesome.”
Caruso, a billionaire real estate mogul who was a Republican until 2019, is running as a Democrat on the ballot. He is currently on the board of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. There are 11 other candidates, including Democratic Rep. Karen Bass, who was once reportedly on President Joe Biden’s short list for vice president.

“It is rare for me to endorse political candidates,” Musk tweeted. “My political leanings are moderate, so neither fully Republican nor Democrat, which I am confident is the case for most Americans. Executive competence is super underrated in politics — we should care about that a lot more!”
Musk’s endorsement came the same day a feature on Caruso was published in the New York Times.
“A victory for Mr. Caruso — a onetime Republican who became a Democrat just before announcing his run — would be a stark shift in this overwhelmingly liberal city, which Senator Bernie Sanders easily carried in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary,” the article said.
The Tesla Model 3 was the No. 1 American-manufactured car in the nation last year, manufactured in Fremont, California, over 350 miles north of LA.
Caruso has claimed that he would prefer to hire more LA police officers, while one of his opponents, Gina Viola, has said she would eliminate the city’s police department if elected. Viola has referred to a vote for Caruso as “a vote for white supremacy.”
Controversial comedian Kathy Griffin, who once posed with a fake decapitated head meant to look like that of former President Donald Trump, tweeted in May, “Rick Caruso is just a mini Trump.”
