A jersey worn by Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant during his rookie season garnered several hefty bids at an auction this weekend in Laguna Niguel, California.
The No. 8 jersey worn by Bryant during the 1996-97 season sold for $2.74 million at SCP Auctions to a buyer who reportedly asked to remain anonymous. SCP Auctions’s David Kohler had estimated the jersey could sell for $3 million to $5 million.
SCP Auctions said the jersey’s authenticity was verified and photo-matched to the one worn by Bryant in five games, including two playoff games. The company touted its sale as the “only known Kobe rookie season playoffs matched jersey.”

The jersey’s price tag is reportedly the second-highest for any basketball game-worn jersey. Another Bryant jersey sold for $3.69 million last year.
Other Bryant items were up for auction, including a 1997 Skybox Metal Universe PMG basketball card that sold for $403,664. The card was autographed and numbered 60 out of 100 cards worldwide.

On Jan. 26, 2020, Bryant died in a helicopter crash that also claimed the life of his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others.
