A Confederate Civil War battle flag stolen 30 years ago has been located in Virginia.
The FBI said the 14th Louisiana Infantry Regiment flag was stolen in the 1980s by a volunteer at the Confederate Memorial Hall Museum in New Orleans.
A tip led the FBI’s art crime team to flag’s current owner in Caroline County, Va., authorities said. Investigators determined that the owner was a collector who bought the flag in 2004 without knowing that it had been stolen.
The owner voluntarily gave the flag over to the FBI.
The flag was turned over the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond earlier this week and will now be sent back to the New Orleans museum.
The FBI says its art crime unit has recovered more than 2,600 items since 2005.
