Jim Williams » The Caps are rocking the ratings

Washington is a Redskins town and Baltimore belongs to the Ravens, but the Capitals have made a strong push to prove that they deserve consideration as the region’s winter sports team. The Caps are averaging a very respectable 1.2 rating on Comcast SportsNet and that is an astounding 140% increase over last year’s numbers.

It seems that Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and the rest of very talented Caps are winning the region’s TV and radio sports fans over.

At the gate the Caps have also been a big hit as well with an increase in attendance of 29.8 percent (17,959 fans per game) which puts them second behind only Chicago who has seen an NHL-high 42 percent increase.

On the radio, a the Caps have always enjoyed a strong following in D.C. — currently on WFED 1500 AM — but in Baltimore, WNST 1570 AM has started running buses down to Verizon Center and has the Charm City talkin’ Capitals hockey.

So “Rock the Red” is gaining momentum and with fans from Capital Hill to Inner Harbor and I must say, it is a fun ride.
