The news overshadowed a 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers later in the evening before a crowd of 28,201 fans at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
On the field Friday, the Rangers got two runs off Orioles starter Kris Benson in the fourth inning. Benson was impressive in the loss, giving up four hits in the complete game.
The Orioles put a run up on the board in the sixth inning when Nick Markakis scored off a Melvin Mora sacrifice fly.
As for Cabrera, equal parts spectacular and uncontrollable, was sent down in hopes that the 24-year-old can find his confidence, which took another blow in a 15-1 loss to Texas Thursday.
“We felt like Daniel was going a little backwards on us. I think the game mentally was getting to him a little bit. We need him. We need this guy,” said Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo.
Cabrera was unavailable for comment at Friday?s game.
Cabrera was 4-7 with a 5.25 ERA in 16 starts, 0-5 with a 7.02 ERA over his last six starts. He led the American League with 75 walks and 13 wild pitches.
“He clearly has been struggling. It was one of those things where we hope he goes down and gets a fresh start in a new environment,” said Jim Duquette, vice president of baseball operations. “Hopefully, it?s just a temporary move. It?s something that when he gets himself back on track, he?ll be back up.”
Duquette reiterated ina pre-game interview that the team has little interest in trading Cabrera before the trade deadline.
“We really never thought about that at all. He?s a guy that is a very rare commodity when he?s throwing strikes. He?s a dominating type pitcher that has a chance to be a No. 1 starter down the road,” Duquette said.
Cabrera will be joined in Ottawa by reliever Sendy Rleal, who was also demoted. The organization recalled another promising pitcher, Adam Loewen, from Ottawa as well as reliever Eddy Rodriguez.
Loewen had five starts with the Orioles earlier this season, going 0-2 with a 7.12 ERA.
