Stimulus update 2022: Massive direct check payments worth up to $3,200 to be sent in 11 days

Eligible Alaska residents will begin to receive $3,200 direct payment checks from the state in just 11 days.

The $3,200 payments for eligible Alaskans were included as a provision in the annual budget. The state annual budget was approved by the legislature earlier this year.

The checks will begin to appear in the bank accounts of eligible residents on Sept. 20, with all payments being delivered by the end of the year, per the Alaska Public Media.

Eligible residents who chose to receive paper checks rather than direct deposit will have to wait until October to receive their state-issued direct payments.

Direct payments of $5,500 were initially approved by the state Senate, per the report, with supporters of the larger payments saying that inflation, the increasing cost of energy, and other economic stresses for residents justify the massive checks.

The state House refused to sign on to the $5,500 payments, so it was negotiated down by both chambers to $3,200 checks for eligible residents. Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy signed the provision into law with the rest of the bill, which contained the state’s annual budget.

“This budget is more than a spending plan. It’s a blueprint for Alaska’s future. Budgets should reflect the values and ambitions of the people they are designed for, and I believe this legislation accomplishes that,” Dunleavy said.

The $5,500 direct payments to residents are the largest in Alaska’s history, according to the report.

The payments will be funded via the state’s Permanent Fund Dividend Division.
