Water main project to begin in Elkridge

Construction crews will replace a corroding water main in the Elkridge area of Howard County.

Workers are expected to replace about 10,000 feet of water main at Montgomery and Lawyers Hill roads, beginning about Aug. 21.

“Some of the piping was corroding, and we need to replace parts of the line,” said Don Lieu, chief of the Utility Design Division in the Bureau of Engineering at the county’s Department of Public Works.

“We’re doing this now, so we don’t get into a position where we have water main breaks that could jeopardize fire-protection services.”

Some of the cast-iron piping, built in 1960, has corroded during the years because of corrosive soils in the area, he said.

Lawyers Hill Road between Montgomery Road and Summer Home Terrace will only be accessible to local, official, emergency and school bus traffic, according to officials at the Department of Public Works.

Other traffic will be directed to Route 1. The project is expected to be finished by mid-September.
