Bowman trial starts Tuesday

The trial for the 44-year-old Maryland mother accused of killing two of her adopted daughters and keeping their bodies in a freezer is scheduled to start Tuesday in Montgomery County. Renee Bowman was arrested in September 2008 after a neighbor found her third adopted daughter, 7, caked in mud and wandering the streets of Lusby, Md., Authorities pressed murder charges against Bowman after they found the bodies of the 11- and 9-year-old girls and determined they had been killed more than a year earlier while living in Rockville.



Missing girl found, accused abductor arrested

An 11-year-old Seat Pleasant girl who went missing Friday night was rescued unharmed by a Tennessee state trooper who recognized the truck she was abducted in from an Amber Alert issued by Maryland authorities. Karina Manzano-Garcia was found with family friend Elmer Joaquin Zelaya on Saturday night, police said. The 41-year-old Zelaya was developed as the suspect in Karina’s abduction and an Amber Alert had been issued. Zelaya was stopped in Madison County, Tenn., and taken into custody. On Monday, he was awaiting extradition back to Maryland. Karina was returned to her family.

Police shoot, kill man in Frederick

A 27-year-old man was shot and killed by police in Frederick after authorities say he pointed a sawed-off rifle at two officers and refused to drop the weapon. Patrick John Fischer II was involved in a domestic dispute when he went outside with the rifle and fired at passing cars around 5:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. When police arrived, he pointed the gun at them and they shot and killed him.

Teen killed by car in Leesburg

An 18-year-old man was struck and killed by a car while trying to cross Route 7 in Leesburg around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, police said. Alcohol and speed were not factors in Mitchell Guerrero’s death, police said. The accident is under investigation.
