President Joe Biden traveled to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to lobby support for his administration’s efforts to ease supply chain bottlenecks while simultaneously showing support for another vulnerable Democrat, Sen. Maggie Hassan.
Hassan has been a close Biden ally, voting for legislation pushed by the administration 98% of the time, but she has recently pushed back on the president’s plan to roll back Title 42 because of concerns about a fresh surge at the border.
The president opened Tuesday by calling Hassan a key player in helping pass his $1 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which he noted would invest $275 million in projects to improve New Hampshire’s roads and waterways.
“It’s great to be here in Portsmouth with your senator, Maggie Hassan, who’s been one of my friends for a long, long time, and to talk about investments we’re making to modernize this port and create jobs and bring down the costs for families in the region,” Biden stated. “Getting big ideas in an actual bill is hard work requiring getting into the real nitty-gritty details, and without losing the big picture.”
Republicans, on the other hand, cheered Biden’s trip, as they view Hassan’s seat as particularly at-risk. One Republican official noted that 68% of New Hampshire voters think the country is on the wrong track, while 57% disapprove of the job Biden has done as president.
That person claimed that Biden’s presence “will serve as a tremendous reminder to New Hampshire voters that Maggie Hassan was indispensable in helping make the failed Biden agenda a reality.”
“What a great day to be a New Hampshire Republican. Today, voters everywhere will be reminded that Maggie Hassan helped Joe Biden bring his failed agenda to life every step of the way,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman T.W. Arrighi. ” It will also make her panicked lurch to the right on immigration and drilling look as insincere as humanly possible. Hassan owns the Biden agenda and Granite Staters know it.”
“Joe Biden can run from his dismal poll numbers, but he can’t hide — Americans know he is responsible for skyrocketing prices and the crisis at the southern border,” Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel added in a similar statement. “Crisis after crisis, Democrats like Chris Pappas and Maggie Hassan have stood with Biden’s disastrous agenda. Come November, Granite State voters will hold Biden and Democrats accountable for the harm they have caused the American people.”
