A Senate subcommittee Wednesday shot down most of the bills targeting illegal immigrants that had advanced through the Virginia House of Delegates, including one that would bar illegal immigrants from enrolling in state colleges and universities.
Another, sponsored by Del. Scott Lingamfelter, R-Prince William, would have required immigration status checks for everyone arrested.
“What happened today is a clear example of how the Democrat-controlled Senate of Virginia is simply out of touch and out of step with Virginians who want us to deal effectively with illegal immigration,” Lingamfelter said.
Immigrant advocates have argued that some of the measures unfairly targeted the immigrant population and could foster distrust between police officers and their communities.
