Drive Guys: getting rid of your junkers

Dear Drive Guys,

What are the best ways to figure out how to sell junk cars in Maryland? Do you just call junkyards? Are there other options? Are there environmental laws I should consider? Any and all details would be appreciated.

From Ed:

Hi Mark,

Many junkyards (“recyclers” nowadays) advertise at their locations and in many of the local papers. Seems the going price I hear most is $300 for your complete car. I am sure this amount varies if the car is incomplete and the value of the weight. I did a search on the Internet, and out of the 10 that were listed in the Bethesda area, no advertising turned up saying any will pay for cars. This of course does not mean that they don’t, just that they may not advertise it. Sorry, but it looks like the newspaper or phone calls will be your best bet. Good luck!

From Jeff:

Mark,

You could try locating a salvage yard in your area and see if they are willing to buy your car. If not try online bulletin boards like craigslist.com.
