Rep. David Scott (D-GA) died Wednesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Scott, 80, was first elected to the House in 2002 to represent Georgia’s 13th Congressional District. The seat, which includes parts of Atlanta and its suburbs, is safely Democratic. Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris carried the district by 43 percentage points over President Donald Trump in 2024.

Scott has suffered from poor health in recent years, even using a wheelchair to traverse the Capitol. The Georgia Democrat was running for reelection at the time of his death.

“Our caucus is heartbroken to hear about the passing of our colleague, Rep. David Scott,” the House Democratic caucus wrote on X. “His commitment to the people of Georgia’s 13th Congressional District and America’s farmers was unparalleled. He will be dearly missed.”

Scott had previously served as the top Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee before he stepped down over questions about his ability to do the job. Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN), who is now running for Senate, was tapped to assume the top Democratic spot on the committee.

“The House Agriculture Committee will remember him for his strong faith, kindness and dedication to our nation’s farmers and working people,” Craig wrote in a statement.
