A mayor in Alabama has been arrested and charged after he was allegedly caught on camera slapping a female staffer in the face.
Spanish Fort Mayor Mike McMillan, 64, was charged last week with misdemeanor harassment and released on $500 bond about an hour after turning himself into authorities.
“There is some video footage that the cameras did catch,” City Attorney David Conner told Fox 10. “We’ve had some requests for those records. We’re reviewing those requests now, and we’ll be giving responses as they relate to those requests.”
The alleged attack occurred in early October in the town of about 7,000 people.
“She alleges that happened, that was done,” Conner said. “I’m sure that the mayor would take a different position about that as to how that occurred, and so we’ll let that unfold and go from there.”
Conner said the city began investigating the incident about a week after it occurred and said that there had been interviews with employees.
McMillan will still be involved in day-to-day activities at the city hall but isn’t allowed to have contact with the alleged victim. He declined to comment on the arrest after being released from jail.
