Multiple dead after bus crashes on I-95 in northern Virginia

A multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 95 killed five and injured dozens more early Friday morning in northern Virginia, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash happened around 2:35 a.m. on I-95 South near the Quantico exit and the 146 mile-marker in Stafford County, Virginia.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that traffic was slowing southbound for an upcoming work zone. A bus failed to slow for traffic and struck six vehicles,” a Virginia State Police spokesperson said to CBS 6 News Richmond. “There are five fatalities in the vehicles struck by the bus. Thirty-four patients have been reportedly transported to area hospitals, three with critical injuries.”

The deadly crash shut down the highway, with traffic being diverted onto Route 1. Delays on the I-95 southbound started near mile marker 154.

Virginia authorities said the crash is still under investigation, and charges are pending.
