John W. George

Age: 47 on Oct. 3 (what a way to celebrate, huh?) Town: Alexandria Previous participation: First time Goals: I always have one single goal, to finish. Next … if possible, would be try to be a little faster than my last race. What are you dreading? Not so much “dread” as uncertainty about how my body will deal with the reputation of the bike course. As far as I can tell, it is the toughest course of all the races. The combination of wind and heat are legendary. What are you looking forward to after the race? Eating, anything I want … especially Ben and Jerry’s “Karmel Sutra” ice cream! And, obviously, the accomplishment of a major goal in my life. I’ll try to photograph in my mind the race at different points. I try not to let my mind wonder too far beyond that while on the course. Just after the race is when I savor the moments … so to speak. Also, it will also be the first time that my girlfriend, who is a competing figure skater, will be sharing the experience of an Ironman race with me. I was able to share her receiving Golds and Silver on the ice in Grand Rapids this year and, should all go well, she’ll see me get my Kona medal. That will make this race even more special.
