Two people were stabbed, one fatally, near Times Square on Monday afternoon, with responding authorities shooting and killing the female suspect, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.

One of the victims died from their wounds at the hospital, the mayor said, while the other is in stable condition. Mamdani applauded police for stopping the attack but said an internal investigation would be conducted.

“Earlier this afternoon, a woman carrying multiple knives stabbed two people in Times Square on Seventh Avenue,” Mamdani said at a press conference Monday evening. “NYPD officers in the area responded immediately, deploying a Taser and discharging their firearms. Both of the victims, as well as the alleged perpetrator, were taken to Bellevue Hospital. I’m deeply saddened to report that one of the victims has passed away, as has the alleged perpetrator. The second victim is currently in the hospital in stable condition. I ask New Yorkers to join me in holding the victim in our thoughts and wishing them a full recovery.”

“I want to thank the NYPD officers who stepped in and prevented a horrific attack from becoming even worse,” he continued. “This is what the men and women of this department do every single day to keep our city safe. As is standard, there will be an internal investigation, and body-worn camera footage will be released to the public.”

The New York City Police Department told the Washington Examiner the shooting occurred at West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue just before 4:30 p.m. Authorities said the woman appeared emotionally disturbed and were not investigating the incident as terrorism-related.

Video footage showed bystanders gawking on the crowded street as police rushed the scene, tased, and then shot the woman after she approached officers while brandishing the weapon.

After stabbing the individuals, officers found her behind the NYPD substation, pointing a knife at them, the New York Post said
