SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration has appointed a National Park ranger as New Mexico’s historic preservation officer.

The Cultural Affairs Department says Jeff Pappas will serve as director of the department’s Historic Preservation Division, which maintains a state register of cultural properties. The preservation officer also reviews nominations for properties proposed for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pappas has worked at Yosemite National Park since 2007, and has taught history at Colorado State University.

He assumes his state job on Aug. 20.

Pappas grew up in Worcester, Mass., and has a master’s degree in American Studies from Baylor University and a doctorate in history from Arizona State University.

The department said Pappas was the unanimous choice of a search committee named by Cultural Affairs Secretary Veronica Gonzales.
