There is a common misconception among non soccer fans in this country. Most non believers think that soccer is not a big sport. American’s are fans of the best soccer in the world and that is good news the European soccer league.
This weekend is a big weekend for football fans. Not the NFL or college football but the international soccer kicks off this weekend.
Both the English Premiership and the German Bundesliga get underway this weekend and soccer fans in Washington are counting the minutes to kickoff.
The Bundesliga CEOChristian Seifert told me in an interview that “America is very important to our long term plans. We love that we have a growing number of fans in the United States and that they follow our teams very closely. Being featured on Gol-TV is great marketing for the league and our aim is too expand our brand in the U.S.”
Seifert has to be happy that many players in the Bundesliga were so successful in the recent Euro2008.
So what can we look forward to this weekend?
The English Premiership gets started Saturday and Sunday on both Fox Soccer Channel and Sirius Satellite Radio. Fans will have a chance to see a double header both days on FSC. Saturday beginning at 10am with Blackburn at Everton followed by at 12:30pm with Liverpool at Sunderland. Sunday fans get New Castle at Manchester United (also on Sirius) and at 1pm Manchester City visiting Aston Villa. Sirius has 8:30am match between Chelsea and. Portsmouth. Chelsea fans know that Sirius is the home to all their matches. ELP fans should tune in Sirius 124 each Saturday and Sunday morning for all the action.
The Bundesliga is in full swing on GOL TV with Friday’s Bayern Munich at Hamburg starting at 2:30pm. Then on Saturday it is a double header starting at 9:30am with Bayer Leverkusen taking on Borussia Dortmund and then at 11:30 am it is Shalke 04 facing Hannover 96. Then Sunday it will be a 1:00 am battle between Borussia M’gladbach and Stuttgart.
FSC will offer the top teams in the Italy starting August 30th when Series A gets underway and the tops in Spain will be featured on Gol-TV La Liga gets underway on August 31st.
