A 6-year-old District of Columbia girl is recovering at home from bite wounds inflicted by pit bull Wednesday evening in Southeast, police said.

Plain-clothed officers walking along the 200 block of 11th Street SE spotted the dog viciously mauling the girl and attempted to distract the pit bull, police said. But when it turned and charged the undercover officer, they opened fire and killed the dog.
