The Washington area (and beyond) offers plenty of triathlons for beginners and seasoned veterans alike. Here is a list of triathlons in D.C., Maryland and Virginia through the end of June. We’ll tackle the second half of the year next week. Be warned, don’t delay in signing up: Several major local triathlons are already full, although some charity slots are still available. March 6: Tri to Help Maryland, Reisterstown. This is an indoor mini-triathlon, with a 10-minute swim, 30-minute bike on a stationary bike and 20-minute run on a treadmill. May 1: Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon, Huddleston, Va. This is a sprint triathlon (750-meter swim, 20K bike, 5K run), with the water temperature expected to be in the upper 60s. Info: setupevents.com.
May 2: Nanticoke Triathlon, Bivalve, Md. This is an open-water swim and triathlon in open water, early in the season. It is a sprint triathlon, with an 0.8k swim, 24.14k bike and 4.99k run. Info: nanticokeriverswimandtri.com.
May 8-9: Kinetic Half and Sprint triathlons, Spotsylvania, Va. Both these races are set up in Lake Anna State Park. The Kinetic Half features a 1.9K swim, 88.5K bike and 21K run, while the sprint triathlon is a 750-meter swim, 18-mile bike and 5K run. Info: setupevents.com.
May 23: Power Sprint Triathlon, Glen Allen, Va. This race (300-meter pool swim, 20K bike, 5K run), held at the Shady Grove YMCA, has filled up the last several years. Info: richmondmultisports.com.
June 5: Shenandoah Valley Triathlon, Luray, Va. This triathlon (750-meter swim, 16-mile bike, 5K run) is set in the foothills of the Blue Ride Mountains. Info: setupevents.com.
June 12-13: Tidewater International and Tidewater Sprint triathlons. Hampton, Va. These races — Olympic distance on Saturday (1,500-meter swim, 24-mile bike, 10K run) and the sprint race on Sunday ( 750-meter swim, 12-mile bike, 5K run) — are being held in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of Hampton.
June 27: Celebration Sprint Triathlon, Columbia. Registration is open for this sprint triathlon in Centennial Park. The race is a 0.62-mile swim, 17.5-mile bike and 3.4-mile run. Info: tricolumbia.org.
June 27: Charlottesville Sprint Triathlon, Charlottesville, Va. This sprint triathlon is in Walnut Creek Park and includes a 0.3-mile swim, 16-mile bike and 5K trail run. Info: setupevents.com.
