NEW YORK (AP) — A group of prominent architects is calling on New York’s Museum of Modern Art to reconsider razing the former home of the American Folk Art Museum.
The Architectural League of New York said in an open letter that MoMA hasn’t offered “a compelling justification for the cultural and environmental waste of destroying” the highly distinctive building.
The letter was signed by over 30 architects including Richard Meier and Hugh Hardy.
MoMA purchased the building after the folk museum defaulted on nearly $30 million in bond debt. MoMA wants to demolish it because it says it’s not compatible with its expansion plans.
The Folk Art Museum relocated to a smaller space uptown
MoMA declined to comment on the Architectural League’s letter.
