Man dies in police shooting

D.C. Police have assigned the fatal police shooting of a suspect to its internal affairs division. Albert Jermaine Payton, 24, of Southeast, was shot by officers after they ordered him to drop his knife and he refused, according to police.

The shooting occurred on Friday evening after officers responded to a call on the 4200 block of 4th Street, Southeast for a suspect who was threatening to “do bodily harm,” according to the report. Officers found Payton at the scene wielding a knife. When he refused to comply with their order to drop his weapon, they shot him. It is unclear how many officer fired their weapons.

Payton was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division is conducting the investigation.
