TikTok hits 1 billion active monthly users, platform says

TikTok reached 1 billion active monthly users, the company announced Monday.

TikTok’s growth has been rapid, with the user count reportedly marking a 45% increase from July 2020. By comparison, Facebook announced it reached 2.9 billion active monthly users, according to a quarterly report.

“Today, we’re celebrating that mission and our global TikTok community. More than 1 billion people around the world now come to TikTok every month to be entertained as they learn, laugh, or discover something new,” the announcement from the company read. “We’re honored to be a home for our immensely diverse community of families, small businesses, and creators who transform into our favorite stars.”

TikTok is a video-sharing platform known for young users posting dance routines and other homemade video content. The tech company’s largest markets are in the United States, Europe, Brazil, and Southeast Asia, the company said. TikTok previously said it surpassed 2 billion global downloads in August 2020.

“TikTok has become a beloved part of life for people around the world because of the creativity and authenticity of our creators,” the company’s statement continued. “Our global community is remarkable in its ability to reach millions of people, across generations. From music, food, beauty and fashion to art, causes, and everything in between, culture truly starts on TikTok.”

TikTok is owned by the Chinese tech giant ByteDance.
