Editorial: The cost of traveling with pets on planes

Did you know that it costs $80 each way to bring a carry on pet on US Airways and American Airlines? Or $50 on Delta? Other airlines charge too.

Checking pets is generally even more expensive.

It is hard to understand why airlines deserve any money for a carry on pet who fits under a seat. And in years of flying we have barely heard a peep from airborne animals but certainly have heard many wailing carried-on infants, who don?t garner extra revenue for airlines.

Airlines also restrict the number of pets allowed in each cabin, often to one per cabin and sometimes one per plane. Many passengers probably wish for a similar restriction for infants.

The last thing that airlines should do is charge parents for bringing children. But there is no reason they should charge for carry-on pets. Come on airlines, play fair!
