A 40-year-old former FBI contract linguist was sentenced to 20 months in prison for leaking classified information to a blogger.
Shamal Kedem Leibowitz had access to classified information so he could translate FBI documents. According to prosecutors, while the Silver Spring man was working for the FBI, he leaked classified documents on U.S. intelligence activities to a blogger who then published the material.
Leibowitz pleaded guilty to providing the documents in December.
“As a trusted member of the FBI ranks, Leibowitz abused the trust of the FBI and the American public by using his access to classified purposes for his own purposes,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Richard McFeely of the Baltimore field office.
