James Comey: Russian interference in the 2016 election ‘as unfake as you can possibly get’

Former FBI Director James Comey Thursday slammed President Trump’s claims that Russian interference in the 2016 election is “fake news” and a “hoax.”

“There should be no fuzz on this whatsoever. The Russians interfered in our election during the 2016 cycle,” he said. “They did it with purpose, they did it with sophistication, they did it with overwhelming technical efforts and it was an active measures campaign driven from the top of that government. There should be no fuzz on that.”

Comey added, “It is judgment of the entire intelligence community … it’s not a close call. That happened. That’s about as unfake as you can possibly get.”

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the investigations into the Russian meddling in the 2016 election — including the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta — is an excuse created by Democrats to explain Clinton’s loss in 2016.

Comey said there’s no reason to make the Russian meddling a partisan issue.

“This is about America,” he said, “not about any particular party.”
