Steele: Marriage is covenant between a man, a woman and God

Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele stood before a group of Christian leaders Wednesday and reaffirmed his belief that marriage is a covenant between a man, a woman and God only.

“Marriage is not a purely human institution,” Steele said. “Marriage defines not only the relationship between a man and a woman but also their journey through life.”

Steele spoke Wednesday afternoon at a marriage amendment workshop. He cemented his position in a state where same-sex couples and legislators have traded lawsuits and have proposed state amendments in attempts to clarify which couples may legally marry.

The Alliance for Marriage Foundation workshop at Lanham?s Hope Christian Church brought together religious leaders from around the nation and across racial lines less than a month before the U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote on the Marriage Protection Amendment.

Bishop Harry Jackson, founder and chairman of workshop co-sponsor High Impact Leadership Coalition, as well as Hope Christian?s senior pastor, told attendees that the workshop would equip them to move forward as one.

“We?re at a strategic time in America?s history,” Jackson told the more than 100 people who gathered at the church in a suburban office park.

Steele said men and women of faith should be concerned, take pause and reaffirm the sanctity of marriage rather than be told who should be able to marry.

“They should not be brow-beaten into thinking something that goes counter to what the people in the community aspire to,” Steele said.
