Man charged in alleged assault on MoCo officer

A man shot by police in Aspen Hill last weekend has been charged with assault for allegedly attacking the officer and a jewelry store employee.

Montgomery County police said 32-year-old Carlos E. McDonald, of the 14300 block of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, entered the Jewelry Corner store in the Northgate Plaza shopping center late Saturday morning and began acting erratically. The store, which was in the processs of closing, had no items for sale and the manager asked him to leave.

Police say McDonald then pushed her and tried to grab her purse as the woman called police. When Officer Donald Hayes arrived, McDonald was holding a large glass jug in his hands and refused to follow Hayes’ orders, according to police.

Hayes used his stun gun, but McDonald dropped the jug, then continued to advance toward Hayes with a jagged piece of the jar. Hayes then fired his gun, striking McDonald in his arm, leg and hip. Hayes remains on paid administrative leave.

McDonald is being held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Center.
