GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) — Teachers in the northwestern Illinois city of Galesburg remain on strike after the union and board of education were unable to reach an agreement on a contract.

The (Galesburg) Register-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/YqPrtk ) teachers spent the weekend on the picket lines.

The two sides are scheduled to resume in-person mediation on Tuesday.

School was scheduled to start last Thursday. But the start date was postponed after the union on Wednesday rejected a contract offered by the public school district.

The offer teachers rejected amounted to a 5.04 percent increase over the next three years, according to the school district.

Union officials say the contract doesn’t include fair working conditions, including just cause for dismissal.
