Montgomery County police have deployed four portable speed cameras, adding to the six cameras placed inside vans and the 60 in fixed cameras in 39 locations. The newest, boxlike cameras operate on batteries and have been deployed in areas where cameras are already in place to evaluate their effectiveness. “The goal is to reinforce the importance of maintaining a safe speed in neighborhoods and particularly in areas where students are walking, driving, or being driven to school,” police said in a statement. The cameras flash when drivers go by at 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit.
