President Joe Biden appeared to embellish yet again the story of how a lightning strike caused a fire at his home nearly two decades ago.
This time around, he was delivering remarks Friday while in Colorado to survey the damage caused by a rare winter wildfire in the Denver suburbs that destroyed more than 1,000 homes and other buildings last week.
“Jill and I have not gone through what you’ve gone through, but we have had lightning strike our home and almost lose our home,” Biden said.
Republicans were quick to chastise Biden.
BIDEN, SURVEYING COLORADO FIRE DAMAGE, COMFORTS FAMILIES AND PROMOTES AGENDA
“That is a lie,” a Republican National Committee Twitter account said in a tweet that contained a clip of Biden’s comments.
Biden tells victims of last week’s Colorado wildfires that he once “had lightning strike our home and almost lose our home.”
That is a lie. According to a 2004 AP report, it was “a small fire…contained to the kitchen” that “was under control in 20 minutes.” pic.twitter.com/cfBDyo6KkT

It then cited a 2004 report from the Associated Press about the lighting strike that hit the Bidens’ home in Delaware and caused “a small fire … contained to the kitchen” that according to a fire official was producing heavy smoke when firefighters arrived, but it “was under control in 20 minutes.”
In his remarks Friday, Biden went on to say, “We only lost about 25% of it. We were able to rebuild. But, you know, the hard part is the memorabilia you lost. The special things that you had put away that you lost.”
Biden previously talked up the 2004 lightning strike while in New Hampshire in November. Discussing his infrastructure plan and how bridges are important for emergency services, he said, “And I know, having had a house burn down with my wife in it — she got out safely, God willing — that having a significant portion of it burn, I can tell, 10 minutes makes a hell of a difference.”

In addition, Biden harkened back to the incident during a speech to first responders in 2013, joking that firefighters saved his Corvette.
“I was down here doing a Sunday program, and lightning struck my home and destroyed a significant portion of it, and you got my wife out,” Biden said at a dinner event, according to Politico. “And in addition to my wife, you got my second-best love out of the house: my ‘67 Corvette, so thank you all. … I owe you. When I say I owe you, I mean I owe you.”
