Virginia professor resigns after calling Biden supporters ‘anti-American’ on Facebook

A professor at a Virginia college has resigned following criticism of a Facebook post he made that accused supporters of President-elect Joe Biden of being “anti-American,” among other insults.

Officials at Virginia Wesleyan University, a private college located in Virginia Beach, announced news of Paul Ewell’s resignation in a news brief released by the university on Monday.

“Last week, Dr. Paul Ewell resigned as Dean of Virginia Wesleyan University Global Campus,” read the brief. “Today, the University accepted his resignation as Professor of Management, Business and Economics.”

In a now-deleted Facebook post made after the general election, Ewell told people to “unfriend” him if they voted for Biden. He also included insults such as calling supporters of the Democrat “ignorant” and “anti-Christian.”

In a Nov. 6 statement released by the university, officials said they were “aware” of Ewell’s comments and that his views were his alone.

“The University is aware of a recent comment made on social media by a member of the campus community,” the statement said. “These views and opinions are expressly the individual’s own. Civic engagement and religious freedom are at the core of the University’s values, and we remain an inclusive and caring community that empowers meaningful relationships through listening, understanding, and communication.”

President Trump threw his support behind Ewell, writing, “PROGRESS!” in a retweet of the story.
