Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich argues the response to comedienne Kathy Griffin’s gruesome photo holding a mock-up of President Trump’s severed head would be far different had the head resembled President Obama.
“Imagine if somebody on the right had done that with a head of Barack Obama?” Gingrich said on Fox News Wednesday.
Gingrich said Griffin’s photo, which she has since apologized for, is symptomatic of dangerous pathology.
“Now, I think what was done by the comedian, by the Left has grown into pathologies, its radical values are so great that I think they are literally becoming dangerous,” Gingrich added.
He warned such attitudes are not only dangerous to the president but to the nation as a whole and the democratic system. He also questioned why there hasn’t been a more forceful response from the television networks Griffin works with, namely CNN.
Griffin co-hosts a New Year’s Eve celebration on CNN and while the network has not announced any decisions concerning the comedian’s future, it has said it is evaluating its New Year’s Eve coverage.
The decision to not immediately sever ties with the comedian has drawn outrage from conservatives, including Gingrich.
“How can she still be on television? How can the networks allow her to be on TV? That will not have happened if somebody on the right had done that with the head of Barack Obama,” Gingrich said.
