Maryland unemployment creeps upward

Maryland’s unemployment rate increased to 4.5 percent in August, up from 4.3 percent in July, according to preliminary estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The state’s unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in August 2007.

It’s the state’s highest rate since July 2005, when the rate was 4.5 percent, according to the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Overall, 44 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases.

The national employment rate rose to 6.1 percent in August, 1.4 percent higher than unemployment a year earlier.
