According to Director of Athletics Communications Roger McAfee, Coppin State University is looking to fill its Director of Athletics vacancy by July 1.
Ron “Fang” Mitchell announced his resignation from the position March 17, but will remain as the men?s basketball head coach.
“I just felt this was the right time,” Mitchell said of his decision. “I still love coaching basketball and will continue to serve Coppin State in that capacity.”
Mitchell was named the Director of Athletics in 1996.
“Coach Mitchell has served for many years as the Director of Athletics at Coppin State,” CSU President Dr. Stanley Battle said in a recent press release. “Coach Mitchell?s many years of service have been appreciated and significant in helping Coppin State move our athletics and academic mission forward. I would like to personally thank him for his many years of service and for continuing to serve as head coach of the men?s basketball team.”
Assistant Athletic Director and head track and field coach Alecia Shields-Gadson will handle the daily activities of the athletic department until a permanent replacement is named.
Mitchell claimed a share of nine of 10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season titles during the ?90s, equaling the most won by any NCAA Division I program the past decade. His athletic tenure includes six 20-win seasons over the past 14 years, and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
