Lake Braddock has a habit of cutting things close and still finding ways to win.
The Bruins were at it again Thursday against Jefferson in a first round Northern Region Tournament game at Oakton.
Senior midfielder Brittany Felschow converted a pass from teammate Mikala Savaides with just 2 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in double overtime. That goal lifted Lake Braddock to a 2-1 victory over the Colonials.
“This was not going to be out last game,” Felschow said. “We’re having too much fun to stop now.”
Neither team scored in the second half or in the first 15-minute overtime period. Sophomore forward AnnMarie Gambescia opened the scoring for Lake Braddock (18-2) in the first half. Junior forward Susan Clark tied the game for Jefferson just before halftime.
» Westfield 3, Edison 1: The Bulldogs (14-5) avenged a 3-1 loss to Edison on Oct. 3 with a victory by the same score in their first round region tournament game at Oakton. Senior forwards Paige Harrison and Danielle Girard both tallied first-half goals for Westfield. Senior defender Allie Heon added the clincher with just 1:23 to go. The National District champion Eagles finished their season at 13-2.
» Marshall 3, Annandale 2: Senior midfielder Brooke Veoni catapulted Marshall (12-6) with her goal at 13:13 of the first overtime. That ended a back-and-forth affair in which each team nursed a one-goal lead. Annandale (11-7) tied the game at 2 on a goal by sophomore forward Marisa Tordella with 12:53 left in regulation.
» Chantilly 3, Yorktown 2: In yet another double-overtime thriller, Chantilly (12-4) outlasted Yorktown on a sudden-death goal from senior midfielder Katrina Deimendes. The Chargers twice rallied from one-goal deficits, tying the game at 2 with 12:40 to go on a tally by senior forward Lindsay Arnsmeyer. Junior midfielder Linden Rock and senior forward Lauren Poppalardo both scored for Yorktown (13-6).
» Robinson 2, Mount Vernon 0: Robinson avoided the first-round upset with two second-half goals and advanced to the quarterfinals on Monday. Senior forward Ashleigh Dethomasis and sophomore forward Megan Dunleavy both scored for the Rams.
