So Michael Vick wants to own a dog.
As an old colleague used to say, “That’s like letting Willie Sutton work at your bank.”
Vick’s conviction for dogfighting means he can’t own a dog until May 2012, but he reiterated to TheGrio.com that he would like to have one for a pet again.
Sure, the Eagles quarterback said all the right things in the interview, claiming “it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process.” And he’s mostly made all the right moves, talking to kids and working with animal rights groups.
But you don’t let someone who tortured a dog own a dog, just like you don’t let a bank robber work as a teller or allow a registered sex offender to baby-sit your kids.
We’re all for second chances, but none of the dogs Vick had a hand in killing got one. Vick’s got a new, uh, leash on life, but that shouldn’t permit him to walk a dog.
