Kapinus wants to take teaching skills to the rink

A self-proclaimed “teacher at heart,” Barbara Kapinus has spent her career in Prince George’s County schools in education policy.

She wants to apply those skills to the ice rink and teach skating when she can no longer ice dance. In the past, Kapinus has unofficially taught skating to neighborhood kids at Fort DuPont in the District.

Armed with a doctorate in literacy education and reading, Kapinus spent much of her 16 years working in Prince George’s County as a reading specialist. She later became an instructional specialist working across the county to help teachers improve.

She went on to work for the Maryland Department of Education and now works for the National Education Association at the standards and curriculum desk in the education, policy, and practice department. There, Kapinus is focused on the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind law. – Violeta Ikonomova
