Indiana man with 20 prior cases steals car and injures two during chase: Police

A car chase in Indiana involving a suspect with a lengthy criminal history ended with two innocent people getting injured, authorities said.

The Indiana Metropolitan Police Department was alerted to a domestic disturbance shortly after midnight on Wednesday. Police said Carl Young Jr., 40, stole the keys to the owner’s Jeep at gunpoint and shot at her home. Police then chased after the Jeep, which resulted in the driver running a stop sign and hitting a vehicle, according to FOX 59.

“The victim in this domestic deserved better and so did the victims in the crash,” said Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police President Rick Snyder. “Frankly, so do the officers involved who risk their lives day in and day out tracking down and chasing the same suspects over and over again.”

Young’s criminal history includes four criminal cases totaling 10 felony counts filed since February 2021. Over the last 20 years in Marion County, court records show Young has been charged in 20 criminal cases. Most recently, Young was charged with operating a vehicle as a habitual offender following a different crash, with a warrant issued for his arrest hours before Wednesday morning’s chase, the outlet reported.

Police said the woman driving the vehicle Young crashed into was ejected from her car and was rushed to the hospital for surgery. Her husband, who was also in the car, was injured in the crash, with his injuries believed to be not as severe.

The police said they found a shotgun and a large amount of narcotics that Young is suspected of stashing in the stolen Jeep. Young, who was wearing a GPS monitor at the time of his arrest, was booked into the Marion County Jail and is due in court on Thursday.
