Attorney General Merrick Garland scheduled an impromptu statement for early Friday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
At the time, it was unclear what the topic of the statement was. Many believed it had something to do with former President Donald Trump, but Garland announced he appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel in the investigation into Hunter Biden. Garland noted Weiss requested that he be given the authority this week.

“Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel,” Garland said.
The press conference occurred at 12:15 p.m. on Friday and was livestreamed from the Justice Department headquarters.
