OGLESBY, Ill. (AP) — A Chicago man apparently drowned as he tried to swim across the Illinois River near Starved Rock State Park over the weekend.

The (LaSalle) News-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1usUaFP ) reported Monday that 22-year-old Angel L. Barreto was swimming in the river Saturday night when witnesses said he went under about 30 yards from shore. His body was recovered the next morning.

Illinois Conservation Police Sgt. Hank Frazier says, Barreto was one of several people camping on a sand bar on the north shore of the river who jumped into the river and tried to swim to Plum Island.

The LaSalle County coroner’s office said an autopsy was scheduled.
